About Us
theaubergineroom started life as a twinkle in the eye of Tom, the owner. This twinkle wouldn’t go away and so in August 2004, he formed The Aubergine Room Ltd. It took a further year before theaubergineroom opened for business in Crowthorne.
But it was worth the wait!
Ethos
We’re convinced that computer gaming is here to stay. As an industry, computer/video games are bigger than the movies and that’s saying something.
We also recognised that playing games can be so much more than sitting in a darkened room, hunched over a glowing screen for hours on end. Gaming has the potential to act as a social catalyst for an engaging and challenging experience.
And this is the kind of atmosphere that we have tried to create at theaubergineroom – a relaxed environment where anyone can come for some entertainement, a chat, a good game and sme friendly competition. We have an accepting and non-judgmental attitude to all our customers.
It doesn’t matter what you wear or what music you like, everyone is welcome!
The Environment
At theaubergineroom we care about people and the environment.
Computers, by their very nature, are not environmentally friendly machines so we do whatever we can to minimise the impact that we as a company have on the environment.
We realise that we are not perfect but wherever practical we make a conscious choice to do the right thing. And you can see the effect of our efforts when you come into theaubergineroom:
- All the glass bottles, cans and paper we dispose of is recycled, not sent off to landfill.
- We use 100% recycled paper in our printer and fax machine.
- Our floor is made from linoleum - made from linseed oil, a naturally occurring substance. This is much more environmentally friendly that vinyl, which is made from PVC - one of the most toxic materials commonly used in modern building practices.
- Our shop sign is made from recycled foamex. Plastics are an environmental nightmare, many take hundreds or even thousands of years to decompose. By recycling plastic whenever possible we reduce the need to make more plastic.
- Our tables are made from FSC certified plywood. The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certify wood that comes from well-managed and sustainable forests. Plywood contains significantly less formaldehyde glue than other sheet materials (e.g. chip board, MDF).
All these little things add up and actually make a difference.
Fairtrade
We also care about people in the developing world who often get a raw deal at the hand of Western economic practices.
To combat this, we source all our coffee, tea and chocolate drinks from Cafe Direct who are a Fairtrade company. This means that the growers and producers of the coffee beans, tea leaves, etc. receive a fair and good wage for their produce.
This differs from the practices of many large companies who force the growers into selling their produce for a price that is way below what is reasonable - resulting in increased poverty and an unacceptable quality of life.
